Quench-and-temper steels can combine strength and toughness after a suitable thermal cycle. Hardenability is the ability to develop the required structure in depth, and differs from hardness. Compare offers in the agreed currency at a named delivery location, including machining allowances, inspection, protective packing and freight; an inexpensive bar or block can become costly if its core properties or traceability are unsuitable.

Technical mechanism and price impact

Carbon and alloy additions change transformation behavior. Diameter, heat transfer, quench medium, agitation and tempering produce gradients in microstructure, stress and distortion.[2][3][4]
