Coil weight alone does not tell you how much strip is available for production. Convert the net mass of a carbon-steel coil into theoretical length and area before planning cut-to-length work or material purchases.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter net steel mass in kilograms, excluding the core and packaging.
  2. Enter width and thickness in millimetres; a 1.25 m width is 1250 mm.
  3. Read theoretical length and area. Deduct head and tail losses and process scrap separately to plan usable production material.

Calculation formula

L (m) = M (kg) ÷ [w (mm) × t (mm) × 0.00785]

M is net mass, w is strip width and t is thickness. Width multiplied by thickness gives the strip’s cross-sectional area. Density converts that area into kg/m; net mass divided by kg/m gives coil length.

Worked example

A 5,000 kg coil, 1,250 mm wide and 2 mm thick, contains approximately 254.78 m of strip and 318.47 m² of sheet. Its linear mass is 19.625 kg/m.

Frequently asked questions

Why can the measured coil length differ?

Thickness and width tolerances, coating mass, packaging or core weight and damaged head or tail sections affect the usable length. Use net mass and measured thickness for a closer estimate.

Is calculated length the usable production length?

No. It is the theoretical total strip length. Deduct edge trimming, head and tail losses and machine scrap according to the actual production process.
