How to use this tool

  1. Read outside diameter and wall thickness in millimetres from the product specification.
  2. Enter the length in metres and the number of identical pipe lengths.
  3. Compare the total and per-length weights with the manufacturer’s table, then check product prices and freight for your order.

Calculation formula

kg/m = π × t × (D − t) × 0.00785

D is outside diameter and t is wall thickness. Subtracting the inner circle from the outer circle gives the annular area. Multiplying by steel density gives mass per metre; the factor 0.00785 converts square millimetres to kg/m.

Worked example

A 60 mm outside-diameter pipe with a 3 mm wall weighs about 4.22 kg/m. Ten 6 m lengths weigh approximately 253.03 kg. Intermediate values are not rounded before calculating the total.

Frequently asked questions

Is nominal pipe size the same as outside diameter?

No. Nominal size identifies a pipe series; it is not necessarily its measured outside diameter. Use the millimetre outside diameter from the relevant product standard or manufacturer’s table instead of converting nominal inches directly.

Can this calculate galvanized or stainless pipe accurately?

The density is for carbon steel and excludes coatings. Galvanized pipe needs an allowance for coating mass, and stainless steel needs its grade-specific density. Confirm the order against the mill table and measured weight.
